Background of the Study
Workplace safety training is essential for equipping employees with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with health and safety standards. The effectiveness of such training, however, depends not only on its content and delivery but also on how employees perceive its relevance and usefulness. In Kogi State, where industries such as mining, transportation, and manufacturing pose significant occupational risks, safety training is a crucial component of risk management. Research has shown that employees who perceive safety training as valuable are more likely to adopt safe work practices and contribute to a culture of safety (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). However, if employees view the training as irrelevant, repetitive, or poorly delivered, its effectiveness may be diminished.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread implementation of workplace safety training programs, workplace accidents and safety violations remain common in Kogi State. This raises concerns about how employees perceive these training initiatives—whether they find them informative, engaging, and applicable to their jobs. Poor perceptions of training may result from factors such as ineffective delivery methods, lack of practical applications, or inadequate employer support. This study seeks to examine employee perceptions of workplace safety training and explore ways to improve its effectiveness.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess employee perceptions of workplace safety training programs in Kogi State.
2. To determine the factors that influence employee engagement and retention of safety training information.
3. To identify challenges that reduce the effectiveness of workplace safety training.
4. To recommend strategies for improving workplace safety training based on employee feedback.
Research Questions
1. How do employees in Kogi State perceive workplace safety training programs?
2. What factors influence employee engagement with and retention of safety training content?
3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of workplace safety training?
4. How can workplace safety training programs be improved to enhance employee learning and application?
Research Hypotheses
1. Employees who perceive safety training as engaging and relevant exhibit better compliance with workplace safety measures.
2. The effectiveness of workplace safety training is influenced by the delivery method and practical applicability of the content.
3. Lack of employer support and inadequate training materials negatively impact employee perceptions of safety training.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on employees across different industries in Kogi State, particularly in sectors with higher occupational risks. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews. Limitations may include subjective biases in employee responses and variations in training programs across industries.
